In 7, I presented an example of a paradigm shift through the comparison of Figures 7.1 and 7.2, which illustrated a collapse in the performance of the 20-day channel breakout system for IGBPUSD (British pound U.S. dollar) from 1993 to 2002 versus 1983 to 2002. When faced with paradigm shifts, mechanically generated trading signals could (depending on the size of system stop-loss levels employed) result in the termination of a system trader s career. Recognition of the potential severity of this problem has led to the establishment of some possible thresholds for the introduction of a discretionary overlay to the implementation of mechanical trading systems. Some of these potential thresholds are, in fact, objectively quantifiable (and therefore mechanical) and were alluded to in 8. If you need to access native libraries, you may need to use JNI. Using JNI isn t the AntiPattern. The AntiPattern is requiring that the JNI run locally with your other J2EE code. In general, the solution to local JNI code will rely on some form of network communication. In some extreme cases, where you can t network, or can t deal with errors well, this network code may not be permissible to the design, in which case you may want to co-locate the JNI code with full knowledge of the ramifications. A couple examples of acceptable co-location are JDBC drivers and JCE connectors. In both cases, you may need native code to reach the database or external system. In both cases, you may have performance constraints that require the driver to speak directly from the J2EE platform to the external system. Therefore, you would want to co-locate the native code in these limited cases.

Technically, there are still several issues with wireless technology deployment in the enterprises today. The most important issue to enterprises is the wireless security. Since the wireless network media is air, the frames transmitted over the air need to be secured. However, the existing 802.11 wireless encryption protocol WEP (Wireless Encryption Protocol) has some aws and hence is not adequate for deployment. In addition, since wireless LAN access points are cheap and very portable, any enterprise visitor can plug an AP (access point) into an existing Intranet LAN drop for unauthorized network access. Therefore, wireless enterprise communications need to not only con rm to the enterprise s wired network security policy but also be treated as traf cs from the public Internet. While the standard 802.11x (i.e., manual authentication at switch port via RADIUS) and 802.11i (i.e., centralized authentication and dynamic key distribution) based WPA (WLAN Protected Access) products are still evolving, to meet the wireless applications requirements, enterprises have to deploy various short-term solutions in order to provide two levels of security that are normally required by enterprise security policy. Figure 12.2 gives an example that illustrates how a wireless device may access an enterprise network. Typically, at an enterprise security perimeter, there are Radius and IPSec VPN servers and/or reverse proxies that provide the authentication, authorization, and accounting (AAA) processing, encryption, and VPN tunnel addresses binding services. On a user s wireless device, there is an SSL or IPSec client installed and a wireless Network Interface Card (NIC). To obtain wireless link services from a WLAN (e.g., 802.11a/b/g) AP, the wireless device s NIC driver will have to be con gured that it is the same as the network id (called SSID) of the servicing WLAN AP and its 128-bit encryption key.
